EU-Made Sofas vs Cheap Imports: What's the Real Difference?

I get asked this regularly. Someone has seen a corner sofa online for €400 and wants to know why mine costs €1,299. Fair question. Here is my honest answer.

I sell sofas made in Poland. I have been doing this for ten years. And I have seen enough cheap sofas to know what the difference actually looks like in practice.

Why Polish-made sofas are worth knowing about

Poland is one of the largest furniture manufacturers in Europe. Polish factories supply major European retailers and produce to EU standards for materials, fire safety, and durability. The manufacturing is skilled, the supply chains are short, and the quality control is consistent.

When I say my sofas are made in Europe, I mean they are made in Poland by people who build furniture for a living in a factory that has been doing this for decades. That is very different from a flatpack shipped from the other side of the world in a container.

What is actually different inside a sofa

The price difference between a cheap import and a well-made European sofa comes down to three things: the frame, the foam, and the fabric.

The frame. A good sofa frame is made from solid or engineered hardwood with reinforced joints. A cheap frame is often made from softwood, MDF, or particle board. You cannot see this from the outside. You start to feel it after a year or two when the sofa starts to creak, flex slightly when you sit down, or shift at the joints.

The foam. High-resilience foam bounces back after use. It holds its shape for years. Cheap foam compresses and stays compressed. The seat cushions flatten, the sofa starts to look tired, and sitting in it starts to feel different from when you first bought it. This usually becomes noticeable within two to three years in a busy household.

The fabric. EU furniture must meet fire safety standards that are more stringent than many export markets. Beyond safety, European fabrics tend to use tighter weaves and better dye quality, which means colours hold and surfaces wear better over time.

What cheap actually costs over time

A €400 sofa that lasts three years costs you €133 per year. A €1,299 sofa that lasts twelve years costs you €108 per year.

The cheaper sofa is not actually cheaper. It just feels cheaper at the point of purchase.

And that calculation does not include the disruption of replacing a sofa every few years, the delivery costs, the time spent choosing a new one, or the environmental cost of throwing a piece of furniture away every few years.

What I cannot guarantee about cheap imports

I am not saying every cheap sofa is terrible. Some are fine for light use in a spare room or a home office.

What I cannot tell you is what is inside them, because there is no consistent standard being applied. The same sofa can be made differently in different batches. The foam specification can change without any visible difference. There is no way to know.

With a Polish-made sofa I know the manufacturer, I know the materials, and I have seen the same models in customers' homes five and ten years later. That is a level of confidence I cannot offer with an import of unknown origin.

The practical question

If you are furnishing a main living room that will be used every day by a family, I would not recommend a cheap import. The maths does not work in your favour and the experience of living with a sofa that is ageing badly is genuinely annoying.

If you are furnishing a guest room or a space with very light use, a cheaper option might be fine. Just go in with realistic expectations about how long it will last.
