L-Shaped Sofa vs Corner Sofa: What's the Difference? | Lava Corners
Joanna Kelly·1 July 2026·4 min readIf you've been Googling "L-shaped sofa Ireland" and keep ending up on pages that call them corner sofas, you're not going mad. They're the same thing. The furniture industry just never agreed on one name.
Here's the short version: an L-shaped sofa is a corner sofa. A corner sofa is an L-shaped sofa. Same shape, same function, different label depending on who's selling it.
Now here's the longer version, because once you understand why the names exist, it's actually easier to find what you're looking for.
Why do they have different names?
The shape of the sofa looks like the letter L. One long section, one shorter section meeting it at a right angle. That's it. Some people call it an L-shape because of what it looks like. Others call it a corner sofa because of where it goes in a room.
Neither name is wrong. They just come from different starting points.
In Ireland and the UK, corner sofa is the more common term in furniture stores. If you search "L-shaped sofa Ireland" you'll find corner sofas. If you search "corner sofa Ireland" you'll also find corner sofas. Same results, different search.
So if you've been confused, that's because the industry is slightly confusing. Not your fault.
Is there any difference at all?
Sometimes people use "L-shaped" to mean a sofa where both sections are roughly the same length. And "corner sofa" to mean one where one side is longer than the other, with a chaise or a longer seating section on one end.
In practice, most sofas sold as corner sofas have one longer section and one shorter section. The exact proportions vary by model.
At Lava Corners, all of our corner sofas are available in left-hand or right-hand configuration. That means you choose which side the longer section sits on, depending on your room layout. It's worth thinking about before you order.
What actually matters when you're choosing one
The name matters less than these four things.
The first is size. Measure your room before you start looking. A corner sofa needs space not just to sit in, but to walk around. I'd recommend at least 30cm clearance on the open sides. Most of our corner sofas start from around 235cm on the longer side.
The second is configuration. Left-hand or right-hand. Stand in your room, face where the sofa will go, and decide which side you want the longer section on. If you're not sure, send me a photo of the room and I'll tell you which way I'd go.
The third is function. Do you need it to open into a bed? Do you need storage underneath? A basic corner sofa and a corner sofa bed are very different products in terms of what they do, even if they look similar from the outside.
The fourth is fabric. Especially if you have children or pets. I have a full guide on that here if you need it: Best Fabric for a Sofa With Kids and Pets
Which corner sofas do we sell at Lava Corners?
All of our sofas are made to order in Europe and delivered free across Ireland. Lead time is 4-6 weeks from order.
We sell corner sofas, corner sofa beds, and U-shape sofas. If you want a standard corner sofa without a sleeping function, our corner sofa range is the place to start. If you want a sofa that also opens into a guest bed, our corner sofa bed range has more options than most Irish furniture stores carry.
We also send free fabric samples, up to five, anywhere in Ireland, delivered within three days. Most people find it easier to make a decision once they have the fabric in their hand rather than looking at it on a screen.
If you're not sure where to start, ring us or send a message on WhatsApp. I'm happy to help you figure out which model and size makes sense for your room before you commit to anything.
