U-Shape Sofa vs Corner Sofa: Which One Is Right for You?

I get this question a lot. Someone has seen a U-shape sofa online, fallen in love with it, and wants to know if it will work in their living room. Sometimes the answer is yes. Quite often it is not.

Here is how I think about it.

What is the actual difference?

A corner sofa has two sections meeting at a right angle. One longer section, one shorter section, forming an L-shape. It sits in a corner of the room and uses two walls as its anchor.

A U-shape sofa has three sections. Two longer sections running parallel, connected by a shorter section across the middle. It wraps around three sides of a seating area and faces inward. It does not sit in a corner. It sits in the middle of the room or against one wall with space on both sides.

They look similar in photos. In a real room they feel very different.

The room size question

This is where most people go wrong.

A corner sofa works comfortably in a room where the longer wall is around 280 to 300cm. That covers the majority of Irish living rooms.

A U-shape sofa needs significantly more space. At Lava Corners, I would not recommend a U-shape for any room where the longer wall is under 330cm. And that is the minimum. If the room is exactly 330cm on the long side, the sofa will fit but the space around it will feel tight.

You also need to think about depth. A U-shape sofa extends into the room from both sides. You need enough floor space in front of it to walk around comfortably and for the room to feel open rather than blocked.

The seating capacity difference

This is where a U-shape sofa really earns its price.

A corner sofa comfortably seats four to five adults. A U-shape seats seven to nine, sometimes more depending on the model. If you regularly have a large family or friends around, a U-shape changes how the room functions. Everyone faces the same way, conversation is easier, and nobody ends up on a separate chair in the corner.

For a family of four or five who occasionally have people over, a corner sofa is usually enough. For a larger family or a household where people gather regularly, the U-shape starts to make a lot of sense.

The price difference

A U-shape sofa costs more. At Lava Corners, the difference is roughly €800 to €1,000 compared to a comparable corner sofa in the same fabric.

That is not a small amount. But when you consider that a good sofa lasts ten to fifteen years, the daily cost difference is very small. The question is whether the extra seating and the larger footprint are worth it for how you actually use your living room.

Which one should you choose?

Choose a corner sofa if your room is under 350cm on the longer wall, you have a family of four or fewer, or your budget is under €1,800.

Choose a U-shape sofa if your room can comfortably accommodate it, you regularly seat six or more people, and you want the living room to feel like a proper gathering space.

If you are genuinely on the fence, I would default to the corner sofa. A well-chosen corner sofa in the right size looks and feels generous without overwhelming the room. A U-shape that is slightly too big for the space is the more common mistake, and it is a harder one to live with.
